WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIRST SESSION?

Your first appointment is an assessment and orientation session. We will establish your goals, and you will embark on the process of becoming an expert on your own nervous system. At this appointment, you will get to experience being hooked up to various biofeedback sensors and learn how your body responds to and recovers from stress.

This appointment is 90 minutes.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING TRAINING SESSIONS?

The foundation of all biofeedback starts with breathing and heart rate/heart rate variability training. After that, we will layer on the remaining modalities as needed or as indicated according to your symptoms and goals. This might include working with muscle tension, peripheral temperature, and skin conductance. Dr. Miller also weaves in many other elements as needed from mindfulness-based skills to guided meditation.

Training sessions are 60 minutes.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Average training length is from 6-10 sessions, however everyone moves at their own individual pace. It is recommended to plan for 6 training sessions at a minimum (not including the initial appointment) in order to allow enough time for your nervous system to start shifting, and for you to begin internalizing your skills.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO COME?

It is recommended that your first 3-5 appointments be scheduled weekly to help you build and reinforce skills. After that point, spacing out your remaining sessions will help you begin to generalize your skills into your daily life. Many find it helpful to continue to follow up periodically to help them refresh their skills.

WHY IS HOME PRACTICE IMPORTANT?

Biofeedback is like exercise for your nervous system, and your body needs regular input to create meaningful and lasting change. Additionally, your body needs repetition to make your new skills become habitual. As part of your training, you may have the opportunity to borrow some at-home biofeedback sensors to augment your practice.

WHAT BENEFITS WILL I NOTICE?

Most people experience increased emotional resiliency, and a general sense of feeling more grounded and at ease. Other benefits include improved sleep, focus, more energy, and increased ability to navigate stressful situations. These benefits are in addition to the specific symptoms people come in to address.
